Do you do it first thing in the morning, on the way to the bathroom, in the bathroom, at breakfast, on the way to work, at work, on the way back from work, at dinner, and last thing before you close your eyes? You maybe even doing it right now reading this blog. If so, you are a serial smartphone checker! Don’t worry; you’re in good company.

Deloitte found in their Mobile Consumer Survey 2014, that out of 35 million users, one out of six used their phone more than 50 times a day. If this is you, maybe check yourself in to a digital detox camp, they do exist, to experience life without your tech or maybe just have a weekend in Center Parcs (definitely no reception there!).

So what are people mainly doing on their phones? Facebook, Twitter or texting?

Surprisingly, the most popular activity is email, with 78% checking their email on their phone (IDC and Facebook – ‘Always Connected’ (2013)). Even more shocking is that most businesses don’t have a mobile email strategy in place. Companies are slowly waking up to the fact that optimised email is essential to the success of their marketing campaign. Some research found that if an email is firstly opened on a mobile and then again on a desktop, 65% are more likely to click through. (Campaign Monitor, Email interaction across mobile and desktop (Q1. 2014)).
